Frevo, Frevo
Brazilian Frevos, Adapted by J. Leyden from the symphonic orchestration by Norman Leyden
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is a 4 day and night extravaganza of color and music which defies normal description. The parade competition is fierce among 500 to 1000 member percussion/vocal ensembles representing the many favelas (the very poor neighborhoods which surround the city).
There is also a parade competition for performing groups from various neighboring states. These groups use traditional band instruments to accompany their singing/dancing groups. Their music is not the Samba of Rio, but a form of march called the Frevo. It is the typical music of North Eastern Brazil.
The make up of the Frevo bands is unique ... a row of sousaphones; a row of cymbals; a couple rows of drums, snare, and bass; a row of tenor saxes; another of E flat clarinets, and still others of trumpets and valve trombones. They play loud and funky and it's all very exciting. We have arranged two of these Frevos; the first reconstructed from an audio tape we recorded live in Rio in 1965; the second reconstructed from the sound track of the motion picture Black Orpheus. With their strong after beat and lively melodies, they are sure to get your audience's feet tapping.

Haitian Folk Song, Arr. by J. Leyden
The arrangement is complete and very effective using steel drums alone. Give your audience a lilting change of pace and if you choose, have some voices singing in the Haitian patois to add to the charm. Either way it's a winner.
