It was inspired by a visit by the composer to the Blue Grotto on the isle of Capri off the coast of Italy. The beginning and end of the piece depicts the pleasant ride from Sorrento to the island while the main part of the song characterizes the composer's emotional experience within the Blue Grotto (a cave accessed only by row boat) as the sun reflects into the grotto and lights up the area with beautiful blue light.
