Africa-O By Ray Holman This tribute piece honoring the drum culture of Africa, written by renowned pan composer, Ray Holman, was first performed at the 1997 West Virginia University Ellie Mannette workshop. The history of pan in Trinidad is rooted in the drum culture of Africa, brought to Trinidad by slaves. Over the years, the playing of skin drums was banned. Later, it was the tamboo bamboo, and then the sound of the transh cans. With the creation of a new instrument from an old barrel, the drum culture has survived and taken on a vital new life. Erasmus Benjamin Black from the 1970's album of the ESSO TRIPOLO STEEL BAND. By Francisco Slinger arr. by Tom Miller The Calypsonian style of lighthearted melodies, with clever lyrics making fun of people as well as political and social institutions, originated in what became known as Calypso Tents where there were contests between singers (with guitar accompaniment) to outdo one another for prize money. Frevo, Frevo Brazilian Frevos Adapted by J. Leyden from the symphonic orchestration by Norman Leyden Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is a 4 day and night extravaganza of color and music which defies normal description. The parade competition is fierce among 500 to 1000 member percussion/vocal ensembles representing the many favelas (the very poor neighborhoods which surround the city). There is also a parade competition for performing groups from various neighboring states. These groups use traditional band instruments to accompany their singing/dancing groups. Their music is not the Samba of Rio, but a form of march called the Frevo. It is the typical music of North Eastern Brazil. The make up of the Frevo bands is unique ... a row of sousaphones; a row of cymbals; a couple rows of drums, snare, and bass; a row of tenor saxes; another of E flat clarinets, and still others of trumpets and valve trombones. They play loud and funky and it's all very exciting. We have arranged two of these Frevos; the first reconstructed from an audio tape we recorded live in Rio in 1965; the second reconstructed from the sound track of the motion picture Black Orpheus.
